Some of the portraits I did for Kennth Vona And Son Construction last fall. It was a great opportunity to create some black and white work in studios with a traditional painted backdrop.
Why Black and White?
It is a timeless and classic technique in photography that has been used for decades to capture the essence and personality of the subject. This technique is characterized by its use of monochrome tones, which can range from deep blacks to bright whites, and its ability to convey a sense of mood and emotion that is difficult to achieve with color photography, as colors are distracting to the naked eye.
One of the great photographers of the 20th century, Irving Penn created a construction worker portrait series. The portraits were ground breaking at the time, as they depicted construction workers in a different light with a fine art portrait.
Back before digital photography, I used to spend hours and hours in the darkroom printing my own work. To see the image come to life infant of my eyes was always a magical experience. Today of course, things are done differently. While I miss the darkroom, I don't miss the chemistry.
